Well, they aren’t manly men in that sense (see next chapter), but also they cannot converse.In a first date scenario Swedes would be shy, dry and a little boring – before they’d get hammered.Among Japanese teenagers the most basic way of starting to date someone is by giving them a “kokuhaku” or love confession.This sounds a bit creepy but it’s not so much telling someone you love them but rather the Japanese way of letting them know you like them and asking them out.I want culture of the other; I want ritual and strangeness and a more interesting story.It took Saigon to illuminate my hypocrisy and to remind me that in an era when the virus of American culture devours and replaces almost everything it touches, we have to remember that “culture” falls all over the good-bad spectrum and so does Westernization.
